Jean-Michel Oppert graduated as MD with a specialisation in endocrinology, diabetology and metabolism and holds a PhD in human nutrition. Since 2003, he is full Professor of Nutrition at University Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris6 and his current clinical position is at the Department of Nutrition, Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris.
He has been a member of the Executive Committee of EASO since 2000 as Treasurer, and was elected President-Elect in 2006. He became EASO President in 2009. He has been member of the board of the French Association for the Study of Obesity (AFERO) and of the Steering Committee of the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO) Physical Activity Task Force. He is founding member and current member of the Steering Committee of the Health Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) Europe network supported by WHO Europe. He is also member of the French Society for the Study of Diabetes (SFD), of the French Society of Nutrition (SFN) and of the French College of Nutrition Professors (CEN).
In 2007-2008 he participated in the research expert group on “physical activity and health” convened by INSERM. In 2008, he was member in the French government commission on “physical activity, sports and health”. In 2009, he was member in the French presidential commission on “prevention and management of obesity”. He is member of the expert group on “sedentary behaviour and obesity” convened by the Department of Health of England (2009-2010). He has participated in various EU projects such as Nugenob, HOPE, ALPHA... He is currently member of the advisory board of the joint WHO/European Commission project on monitoring progress on improving nutrition and physical activity and preventing obesity in the European Union.
